From Mega to Meta: Marty Neumeier on relevant skills in the digital age

The other week, my friend Vincent Matyi recommended a DMI Webinar where Marty Neumeier shared his thoughts on what he calls “Meta Skills”. Sounds somewhat familiar, but what are Meta Skills again? Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths, many might respond who live in Silicon Valley like Marty does. However, it’s not Mega, but Meta Skills he referred to in his talk, which according to Marty are: Feeling, Seeing, Dreaming, Making, and Learning. If you would like to learn more about those skills and about yourself, take Marty’s Meta Skills Quiz.

In between playing with the kids and having dinner – it was evening in Germany – I immediately understood where this is going and got excited. I recognized the connection to what we strive for at Age of Artists: Different skills for a different time.

I reached out to Marty and he immediately accepted my invitation to have a conversation. We got together past week and I am truly thankful we did. Here are a couple of quotes to remember, at least for me:

  • “I like to make things clear, not easy.”
  • “I think the template is the problem. I like tools if they are a framework, not a method.”
  • “Meta Skills today must be picked up by osmosis. What is missing in education today is classes in imagination, holistic thinking, problem solving without a problem.”
  • “It’s better to be helpful than right.”

There are more fantastic quotes to explore in 46 Rules of Genius, an innovators guide to creativity, Marty’s latest work and blog.
